Ala-Archa National Park
Bishkek's Backyard — Tian Shan in Half a Day
About Ala-Archa National Park
Just 40 km south of Bishkek, Ala-Archa is the easiest way to experience serious Tian Shan mountain scenery without committing to a multi-day trek. The national park rises from a forested gorge at 1,500 m to glaciated peaks above 4,800 m, offering everything from a flat 2-hour riverside walk to technical alpine routes on peaks like Korona (4,860 m) and Semenov Tianshansky.
The most popular hike leads to the Ak-Sai waterfall and glacier viewpoint — a 4-5 hour round trip with 600 m elevation gain that rewards with dramatic ice and rock scenery. For less effort, the flat valley trail to the first bridge (1 hour return) works for families and jet-lagged arrivals. In winter the park transforms: ice climbing on frozen waterfalls draws experienced alpinists, and snowshoeing along the lower trails is increasingly popular.
Ala-Archa is the first stop on our 3-day Kyrgyzstan itinerary and the best "day one" activity for acclimatization and mountain orientation before heading deeper into the country.
