About Tash Rabat

Hidden in a remote valley at 3,200 m, Tash Rabat is the best-preserved Silk Road caravanserai in Central Asia — a 15th-century stone structure where merchants, pilgrims, and travelers once sheltered before crossing the treacherous passes into China. The building's 31 domed rooms, central hall, and underground passages are remarkably intact, and exploring them by flashlight feels genuinely otherworldly.

The surrounding valley is achingly beautiful: rolling hills, grazing yaks, nomadic yurt camps, and absolute silence broken only by wind and birdsong. The night sky here is among the darkest in Kyrgyzstan — with zero light pollution, the Milky Way is extraordinary.

Tash Rabat is also Section 8 of the Kyrgyz Nomad Trail — the shortest section at 45 km and one of the most accessible for first-time KNT hikers. Combine it with a trip to Song-Kul or the remote Chatyr-Kul lake (a protected Ramsar wetland near the Chinese border) for a powerful 4-5 day Naryn circuit.

How to Get There

From Naryn: 2-3 hours by 4WD via At-Bashy (~3,000-4,000 KGS for a vehicle). From Bishkek: combine with a Song-Kul trip via Kochkor for a multi-day circuit. The road from At-Bashy to Tash Rabat is unpaved but passable in summer — do not attempt in a sedan. Arrange transport through CBT Naryn or your yurt camp host.

Where to Stay

Yurt camps near the caravanserai ($20-35/night including meals). Facilities are basic — no electricity, no running water, pit toilets. Bring a warm sleeping bag or extra layers as nights at 3,200 m drop near freezing even in July. The nearest guesthouses are in At-Bashy (1.5 hours away).

Pro Tips

  • 1Bring a good flashlight or headlamp — the caravanserai interior is pitch dark and the underground passages are fascinating
  • 2Altitude can hit hard at 3,200 m; spend a night in Naryn or At-Bashy first to acclimatize
  • 3Stay overnight at a yurt camp for the stargazing — this is one of the darkest sky sites in Central Asia
  • 4Combine with Chatyr-Kul lake (border permit required, $15-30, arrange through a Naryn agency 1-2 weeks ahead)
  • 5The golden hour light on the caravanserai stone walls is spectacular — photograph at sunrise and sunset
  • 6Horseback rides through the valley can be arranged with yurt camp hosts ($15-25/half day)
  • 7This is Section 8 of the Nomad Trail — GPX tracks available from kyrgyznomadtrail.com for self-guided hiking
  • 8Bring all snacks and personal supplies — there is nothing to buy at the site
  • 9Blogger pick: Tynchtyk MR considers this the #1 astrophotography location in Kyrgyzstan — Milky Way arches directly over the stone walls
  • 10Blogger pick: Lost with Purpose recommends combining Tash-Rabat with the Min Kush Soviet ghost town for a "history and stars" circuit
